Wikipedia:Linux

Linux is a freely available Unix-like operating system for 386 and above PCs and is currently being developed for other architectures as well. Have a look at Linux in a networked environment.

There are two main 'views' on what Linux is:

  • Linux Kernel Firstly, Linux is an operating system kernel, the "basic" software used to control a computer and to provide convenient abstractions of the hardware for software to use.
  • Linux distributions Secondly, there are complete systems based on the Linux kernel that then include all sorts of additional software.

"Linux as kernel" is the more strictly correct view; there are systems based on other OS kernels (such as various BSD systems) that have much the same sorts of "distributions" with many of the same applications. But the wide popularity of Linux typically comes from people using it that have very little direct interest in OS kernels. There is always a little bit of tension as a result of the presence of these varying perspectives...

A lot of books have been published about Linux. O'Reilly and Associates has a good selection.

To keep up to date on the latest happenings in the Linux world, there is a newspaper - the Linux Gazette.
