Wikipedia on VA Research was started by Larry Augustin to build and sell Linux-based servers. It was notable for an IPO that had share prices as high as $320 USD.
Heavy competition from vendors like Dell kept them from making terribly huge profits on hardware. They are presently most notable for operating SourceForge and Slashdot.
